Renew Your ICF PCC Credential

Everything you need to know to renew your ICF PCC coach credential.

You've put a lot of time, money, and energy into getting your ICF PCC. Here's how you renew it while building toward your MCC skills and training requirements.

Our biggest tip: start early!

This page will show you everything you need to know to renew your ICF coach credential.

  • The best kind of Core Competency training hours to choose.
  • How to meet the ethics requirement for free.
  • Options for PCC renewals.
  • How to earn Resource Hours for free.
  • How to renew your credential late, up to 12 months after expiration.

Let's get started!

This is only a guide. Use the ICF's renewal page for definitive information

We make every effort to keep this information up-to-date, but the ICF sometimes adjusts their definitions and requirements with little notice. Here's the ICF's Renewal page. Use our renewal application instructions to help get you to the right place.

Step 1: Get started early!

Completing the renewal requirements will take longer than you think. Don't wait to get started.

Step 2: Find out when your coach credential expires

Go here and look up your name to find the date of your credential expiration. If your name is listed and you're within the expiration date, move to the next step. If your name isn't listed, it could mean one of a few things:

  • Your credential expired more than 2 months ago, but you can still renew it late. See Step 3 below.
  • Your credential expired more than 12 months ago, in which case you'd need to apply anew. See end of Step 3.
  • Or, there could be a mistake in the ICF's listing. Look for your original approval email for the expiration date, or write the ICF Credentials & Standards folks and ask them.

Step 3: PCC renewal requirements

For PCC credentials that have not yet expired:

40 hours of Continuing Coach Education (CCE) in the three years since the initial award of your credential or since your last credential renewal. Of the 40 hours of CCEs required:

  1. For all credentials, at least 24 CCEs must be in Core Competencies. At least 3 of these hours must be in coaching ethics.
  2. The remaining 16 hours can be in Resource Development or Core Competencies (see Step 6 below).

For credentials that have expired: (skip to Step 4 if your credential hasn't expired)

Instructions for lapsed credential renewal until November 2, 2025.

If you are unable to submit your credential renewal application by its expiration date, ICF provides a 2-month grace period during which time your credential will remain active and you don't need additional CCE hours to renew.

However, if you are unable to submit your credential renewal application by the end of the 2-month grace period, your credential will lapse and you will not hold an active credential. You will still have an additional 10 months to renew your credential, but you will need to provide an additional 1.2 CCE hours for each lapsed month.

Below is the list of CCE’s required by month when submitted following expiration date:

Months Following

 847.228.32
 948.429.04
 1049.629.76
 1150.830.48
 125231.2

Once 12 months has passed from the expiration date of the credential it is now fully expired. In order to reinstate your ICF Credential, you will be required to submit a new credential application rather than completing a credential renewal application.

Instructions for lapsed credential renewal after November 3, 2025.

If you are unable to submit your credential renewal application by its expiration date, ICF provides a 2-month grace period during which time your credential will remain active and you can renew as normal.

However, if you are unable to submit your credential renewal application by the end of the 2-month grace period, your credential will lapse and you will not hold an active credential. You will still have an additional 10 months to renew your credential, but you will need to pay a $100 fee in addition to the renewal fee and turn in the required 40 hours of CCE (see above). Once submitted and approved, your credential will be renewed for three years from its most recent expiration date.

Once 12 months has passed from the expiration date of the credential without renewal, it is now fully expired. In order to reinstate your ICF Credential, you will be required to submit a new credential application rather than completing a credential renewal application.

Step 4: Take the most efficient Core Competency CCEs

Here's a renewal power tip: gather CCEs for your renewal that will also help you reach your next coach credential. See renewal suggestions for PCC:

Renewing your PCC with Level 3 Courses:

Don't just go through the motions collecting random CCEs, instead learn something to advance your skills toward an MCC! Our Level 3 The Art of Masterful Coaching program will move you from PCC to an MCC skill level. We offer one cohort a year, which qualifies as 25 Core Competency training hours toward your MCC and towards renewing your PCC. Just add the free Ethics class (see Step 5) and a few free Resource Development hours (see Step 6) and you're set to renew your PCC. After you've taken the Level 3 Cohort three different years, you'll have completed the program and receive a Level 3 Certificate.

Renewing your PCC with Level 2 Courses:

If you want to brush up and advance your PCC skills, take our Level 2 courses. Each count as CCE Core Competency hours.

Step 5: Take 3 ICF Ethics hours

All ICF Credential-holders are required to demonstrate completion of at least three CCEs in the area of coaching ethics to be eligible for renewal of their ICF Credentials.

  • The Ethics CCEs count as Core Competency hours.
  • There's a free ICF Ethics course you can take that meets the requirement.
  • Once you complete the ICF's free Ethics course, the training hours show up in your ICF Profile under Transcripts.

Step 6: Take remaining CCEs in Resource Development or Core Competencies

For your remaining CCEs, you can take additional courses from our Level 2 program, or you can do what the ICF calls Resource Development. Resource Development is any learning that falls outside of the ICF Core Competencies, but still contributes to a coach’s professional development (e.g., personal development, coaching tools or personality and productivity assessments, business building, etc.). CRM Coach’s Community events such as the Coach’s Café and Coaching Demonstrations can count as Resource Development hours.

The ICF lists many options and how to document them on this page. And here's a couple examples of how to write up what you report Resource Development to the ICF.

Step 7: Submit your renewal

Go here and click the Start Your Renewal buttong to begin your renewal application. Scroll down for answers to commonly asked questions. Click on the Sample Renewal Application near the bottom of the page to see how to submit your documentation.

Step 8: Let us know when you renew or get a new credential

We want to celebrate with you! Email us or click on the green "Got a question?" button below to let us know. We'll mark your credential and new expiration date in our records so we can assist you in the future.
